The Center for Service and Learning (CSL) supports the mission of IUPUI to promote excellence in civic engagement. The mission of the Center for Service and Learning is to involve students, faculty, and staff in service activities that mutually benefit the campus and community. In January, 2007, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Uday Sukhatme, designated CSL as one of 19 campus Signature Centers to support research on service learning.
The CSL Research Collaborative (CSLRC) will provide resources, convene scholars, conduct and publish research, disseminate information, and secure external funding. The mission of the CSLRC is to increase the capacity of IUPUI scholars to conduct research on service learning and to further advance the knowledge of good practice, the campus mission, and the public purposes of higher education. The three initial pillars of our work include: Research and Scholarship on International Service Learning, Assessing Outcomes, and Retention of First-Year and Minority Students (see “Projects” tab for specific information).
The CSLRC has recently established a partnership with Learn and Serve America’s National Service-Learning Clearinghouse (NSLC) in order to create a web portal and website on assessment and service learning research. The CSLRC/NSLC partnership will also be producing a webinar on research on service learning (actual date for webinar TBD).
The CSLRC is currently in works with Stylus Publishing in order to create the new IUPUI Series on Service Learning Research. The first such volume is International Service Learning: Conceptual Frameworks and Research (publish date TBD). The CSLRC convened experts from around the U.S. (and even internationally) to author the edited book at two symposia in November 2007, and March 2008. Please check this and Stylus’s website in the near future to see progress of the book. Click here for the Table of Contents
