The CSL Research Collaborative (CSLRC) is a leader on both research and scholarship of international service learning (ISL). Our focus is on American college students engaging in service learning activities abroad. For example, this might be an undergraduate at Indiana University who goes to Nicaragua for a semester in order to engage in service learning as part of her academic program. Thus, we define ISL as:
…a structured academic experience in another country in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that addresses identified community needs; (b) learn from direct interaction and cross-cultural dialogue with others; and (c) reflect on the experience in such a way as to gain a deeper understanding of global and intercultural issues, a broader appreciation of the host country and the discipline, and an enhanced sense of their own responsibilities as citizens, locally and globally. (Bringle, Hatcher, Jones, & Sutton, 2007)
The CSLRC is currently in works with Stylus Publishing in order to create the new IUPUI Series on Service Learning Research. The first such volume is International Service Learning: Conceptual Frameworks and Research (publish date TBD). The CSLRC convened experts from around the U.S. (and even internationally) to author the edited book at two symposia in November 2007, and March 2008. Please check this and Stylus’s website in the near future to see progress of the book. Click here for the Table of Contents
On February 29th and March 1st, 2008, IUPUI hosted the “3rd Annual Conference on International Service Learning: Advancing Research and Practice” at the IUPUI University Place Conference Center in Indianapolis, IN. The conference was well attended with over 120 persons registered for the conference. Click here to go to conference information page
In addition, we have prepared several resources for researchers and practioners interested in international service learning. One is a comprehensive bibliography of research on ISL, while the other is a list of colleges and universities in the U.S. that engage in ISL activities.
ISL Bibliography (as of 9/2007)
ISL Programs at Different Colleges and Universities in the U.S. (as of 6/25/07)
