How To Become an Eligible Community Work-Study Employer

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Community Work-Study (CWS) Employer through IUPUI.  Government and private non-profit agencies may be considered for eligibility as a CWS Employer. To apply, please carefully review and complete the following documents:

Government and Non-profit Agencies:

Non-profit Agencies must also submit the following additional forms:

  • Articles of non-profit incorporation (including page signed & sealed by Secretary of State);

  • Statement from the IRS regarding federal tax exempt status;

  • A written statement describing agency’s services provided;

  • A written statement describing all funding sources for the agency;

  • A list of agency’s board of directors and affiliations; and

  • Examples of agency publicity that makes services known to the general public.

The documentation will be forwarded to the Indiana University Compliance Officer for final review and approval. Completion of the review typically takes two to three weeks.

Upon approval as a Community Work-Study Employer by Indiana University, your agency will be assigned an IU Payroll Account Number* and a Work Area Number which will be needed for the hiring process. You will also receive more detailed information about recruiting students, the hiring process, paying students, and working with student employees.

*When you hire a work-study student you will receive an invoice requiring you to deposit into this payroll account 25% of the student’s anticipated work-study earnings based on his/her Federal Work-Study award. Any unused amount will be kept in the account for future use or fully refunded upon request. Please see Payroll Procedures for more information.
