The Sam H. Jones Community Service Scholarship Program is a distinctive feature of the campus commitment to civic engagement. Created in 1994 through the revenue from the sale of IUPUI license plates, the program is now supported through campus scholarship funds and private donations. To date $1,705,264 of campus scholarship funds have been awarded to 891 students. Jones Service Scholars are engaged in service learning courses and ongoing service within the community as a part of the scholarship program. Their service experiences vary from giving art lessons at Indy Parks and Recreation to volunteering at the Indianapolis Zoo.

The Community Service Scholarship Program provides a prototype for a complete and connected scholarship program that is academically based, promotes service among students, and provides meaningful outreach to the community. Initially funded by the sale of IUPUI license plates in 1994, scholars are recognized for past service, engage in community service during the term of the scholarship, and enroll in a service learning course during the fall semester. Beginning in 1999-2000, $100,000 of campus funds were designated for expanding the Community Service Scholarship Program to support entering students, continuing students, and students assisting in service learning classes. In 2006-2007, close to $400,000 in campus funds supported 150 students.
