Freshman Service Scholars

Sam H. Jones Community Service Scholarship Program
Priority Deadline: February 1

ACTIVITIES:

  1. Enroll in a service learning course with other Freshman Service Scholars (FSS) in the Fall semester
  2. Contribute at least 3 hours of community service per week throughout the academic year at a community partner service site in the Greater Indianapolis area, currently George Washington Community School
  3. Coordinate a campus wide community service project with other FSS, currently National Youth Service Day
  4. Participate in service leadership seminars with other Service Scholars in the Spring semester
  5. Attend other service leadership-focused events, including United Way Day of Caring, Service Scholar Orientation, and a January FSS Rejuvenation Retreat

Scholarship applications for the Freshman Service Scholarship are available in the IUPUI Scholarship Office, Cavanaugh Hall, Room 103 or online at the IUPUI Office of Student Scholarships.


APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

The Freshman Service Scholarship recognizes first year IUPUI students for previous service to their high school and community, and supports their continued involvement in educationally meaningful service, leadership, and social advocacy.

Applicants must meet regular admissions standards.

The application includes:

  1. Completed IUPUI scholarship application,

 

  1. A personal essay,
  1. An official academic transcript, and

 

  1. Two letters of recommendation, with at least one from a teacher who is familiar with the applicant's service involvement.

The personal essay includes:

  1.  A brief history of the applicant's volunteer activities and,
  2. A description of one volunteer experience and how it has contributed to the applicant's personal development.

On campus interviews will be conducted for all finalists.
