"Where Roses Grow in Concrete: Toward Unconditional Love for Our Communities" Abstract

What are the material conditions that negatively impact urban communities of color?  How should the global citizen respond to these conditions?  What is the potential of such responses to move us toward a more socially just society and global community?

This session discusses a framework for community empowerment that combines César Chávez’s theory of social change and Tupac Shakur’s discussion of THUG LIFE as the path to growing roses from concrete.  These frameworks focus on developing young people that have critical sensibilities about the conditions in urban communities of color.  In addition to raising awareness, this talk also aims to empower young people to think about themselves as change agents that are responsible for, and capable of, changing these conditions.
