FAB 2009
Trip Information:
This year, Alternative Fall Breaks will be offering one trip to Cincinnati, Ohio. The trip is explained below in further detail. The trip will be from October 9-11, 2009; the specific departure and arrival times will be announced at the MANDATORY Pre-Trip meeting.
Cincinnati Urban Experience
The Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless coordinates service opportunities while educating and immersing groups in an urban environment. GCCH arranges for service opportunities at many of its forty nine member agencies. Days during CUE will be spent volunteering at local homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other agencies that provide services for the area’s homeless population. We also offer educational activities so that participants can learn about the root causes of homelessness and poverty. All participants will have the opportunity to hear from speakers, participate in team-building activities, and reflect on how they can get involved in dispelling myths and creating empathy rather than apathy. While doing service and being educated, students are taught the importance of advocacy to promote systemic change.
WHAT IS FAB?
IUPUI Fall Alternative Break (FAB) is a low-cost service trip that takes IUPUI students to communities outside of Indianapolis, where they take part in volunteering and hands-on learning. Students perform short-term projects for community agencies and learn about issues such as health, literacy, poverty, racism, hunger, homelessness and the environment.

WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE LIKE FOR FAB?
FAB is a service trip and accordingly, participants will be volunteering almost every day. The schedule varies depending on the trip and the student leader, but it is typical to have team meetings and reflection sessions daily in addition to the scheduled service work. Every trip leader tries to allow time for sightseeing, exploring, and short field trips. However, the main focus is on service and the majority of the time will be spent volunteering.

WHY IS IT CALLED FALL "ALTERNATIVE" BREAK?
These trips are called "alternative" because they allow college students to participate in a different experience compared to the stereotypical college breaks. Alternative Breaks trips are alcohol and drug-free for all participants and focus on volunteering, team building, bonding and fun!

WHO PLANS AND LEADS THE TRIPS?
All Alternative Break trips are planned, organized, and led by IUPUI undergraduate student leaders who have been trained by BreakAway. BreakAway is the national nonprofit with a mission to assist campuses in quality alternative break programs that inspire civic engagement amongst college students. If you are interested in being involved with this process contact the Alternative Breaks Service Organization (ABSO) for more information.

WHAT IS A PRE-TRIP MEETING?
The pre-trip meeting is run by the student leaders who have planned the break. It is designed to provide further information about the schedule, activities, and packing list for the trip. It is also a time for the participants to get to know each other and ask questions.

IS THE PRE-TRIP MEETING MANDATORY?
The pre-trip meeting is a necessary part of the break experience and each participant must attend one. Some trips may have 2 dates for the pre-trip meeting, so please check with the student leader.
