The Civic-Minded Graduate



The IUPUI Civic-Minded Graduate Model
Developed by the Staff of the IUPUI Center for Service and Learning

The IUPUI Civic-Minded Graduate (CMG) Narrative Prompt and its accompanying Rubric were designed as assessment tools to evaluate civic learning outcomes for college graduates.  The concept of Civic-Minded Graduate represents the intersection of three student attributes:

  • Self-concept or self-identity
  • Academic knowledge and skills, gained through formal education
  • Civic attitudes and participation]

 


Definition of “Civic-Minded Graduate”
The Civic-Minded Graduate is skillfully trained through formal education (bachelor’s degree or equivalent), and has the capacity and desire to work with others to achieve collective public goods.  The concept of civic-minded graduate incorporates the following domains (see Bringle & Steinberg, in press):

    • Volunteer Opportunities                                                             
    • Academic Knowledge and Technical Skills                            
    • Contemporary Social Issues                                                       
  • Skills
    • Listening                                                                                             
    • Diversity                                                                                             
    • Consensus-Building

  • Behavioral Intentions

Other Outcomes for a Civic-Minded Graduate (Based on CMG Narrative):

  • Express a civic identity, in which commitment to service is well-integrated into his/her self-identity
  • Understand how social issues are addressed in society
  • Actively participate in society to address social issues
  • Collaborate with others and show respect for their differences
  • Discuss the benefit of his or her education to address social issues
