Consultations and Convenings

Develop as a professional, practitioner, scholar; grow as a person.

Teaching, researching, and collaborating with diverse communities creates opportunities for learning and creative problem-solving that often challenge our prior assumptions and practices.  The Center for Service and Learning provides an array of consultative and convening services available to faculty, staff, and administrators interested in integrating community engagement into their research, teaching, or public service.  Center staff also work with departments, programs and schools to support them in advancing an integrated community engagement agenda or creating supportive environments for community engaged scholars.

Our consultative approaches include:
  • One-on-one consultations – New to community-engaged teaching? Struggling with student evaluations of your service learning course?  Having trouble demonstrating the value of your engaged teaching or research?  CSL staff are available for individual faculty consultation across a range of topics related to engaged scholarship and practice.
  • To-your-door Workshops – If you have a topic of interest to a group of faculty and staff in your unit, a CSL staff member can bring our expertise to you.
    • Topics Include:
      • Course/Program Design
      • Student learning Assessment
      • Reflection as and for learning
      • Civic learning and development
      • Community Partnership development/sustainability
      • Documenting Public Scholarship
      • Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
      • Capacity Building for Community Collaboration
      • Disciplinary Models of Community-Engaged Teaching

  • Communities of Practice/Learning Communities – Deep learning frequently happens in the context of being part of a group.  For those seeks opportunities to connect to others across campus with a common interest. The Center for Service and Learning periodically sponsors commuities of practice on issues of relevance to faculty and staff.
  • Deep Dives and Engaged Department Consultations – CSL staff can engage in extended work with a program or department when programmatic goals related to community engagement are best served through ongoing access to an external facilitator/resource person.
  • Convenings, Conferences and Symposia – The Center regularly hosts visiting scholars to share their knowledge and expertise.  We also seek to increase internal networking and sharing of ideas across campus through our Civic and Community Engagement Across the Disciplines (CCExD), the Engaged Scholars’ Roundtable series as well as our annual Civic Engagement Showcase and Symposium (CESS).
  • National Conferences/Forums – The Center periodically hosts national forums/conferences that bring together local, national and international scholars and practitioners.
