Service Scholars in Action

Student Scholar Spotlight

Cassie Vera

IUPUI Senior, Alternative Breaks Co-Coordinator

Cassie Vera is an IUPUI Senior studying Marketing and International Studies in the Kelley School of Business.  This is Cassie’s 4th year as a SHJ Scholar.

Her favorite experience as a SHJ Scholar:
“I would say the best part about the SHJ experience is the family aspect of the scholarship programs. I have met so many great people through the different programs and have learned so much over the years. The SHJ family has shaped me into the leader I am today while still pushing me to grow and improve.”

Her favorite service project:
“I would say my favorite service project was the Alternative Spring Break trip I led for the Spring of 2016. The trip focused on Immigration and proved to be a great learning and bonding experience. As the trip leader, it was great seeing my hard work pay off and I was still able to learn from the experience as well! The key takeaway was that everyone has a story, the chapters we remember and choose to tell shape the type of people we become.”

Her favorite quote:
"Recognize yourself in he and she who are not like you and me" - Carlos Fuentes

Her favorite snack:
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Her advice to new SHJ scholars:
“My advice to first year scholars would be to make sure you get to know some of the other scholars. They can help you to get more involved and they make for some of the greatest friends!”
