Service Scholars in Action

Student Scholar Spotlight

Dana Alhaffar

IUPUI Senior, Community Service Leader

Dana is an IUPUI Senior studying Neuroscience in the School of Science. This is her second year as a Sam H. Jones Scholar.

Her favorite experience as a SHJ Scholar:
“One of the best parts of my SHJ experience was being able to serve at numerous sites in my community.  I was amazed by how many different social issues actually exist and enjoyed learning about the many organizations that work to target them.  I also loved getting to know the other service scholars during my two years with the program.”

Her favorite service project:
“My favorite service project was going to Cats Have for my first JITS event as a ServiceCorps scholar.  I organized the event and took about 6-7 other students.  We helped clean the home that over 100 cats lived in and also got time to play with them.  There were cats of all ages, colors, and health conditions.  As an animal lover, I was thrilled to be able to serve in my community while also getting time with the cats!”

Her favorite quote:
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Her favorite snack:

Her advice to new SHJ scholars:
“My advice to first year scholars would be to take advantage of all the service opportunities available in Indianapolis.  I think community service is so crucial and so important that everyone should regularly take part in it.  There are such a variety of social issues and organizations that there is bound to be something they are passionate about.”
