Westside Education Taskforce George Washington School Community Outreach Partnership CenterThe initial work of what was originally called, the Office of Neighborhood Resources, was funded by a grant from the Office of University Partnerships department of Housing and Urban Development. This seed funding was awarded to support Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC). The COPC Program was a 3-year grant designed to encourage institutions of higher education to join in partnerships with their communities. COPC projects help communities respond to the problems of greatest concern to their residents by leveraging the resources of universities and communities through the development of strategic partnerships.
The first COPC grant focused on economic development and education. Second rounds of awards, COPC New Directions grants were made in 2003. The focus of this second series was on health promotion and financial literacy. Significant partnerships and programs were developed through this campus-community partnership with assistance from this grant. The work in these four areas of interest is still being completed through leveraging of other university dollars and community grants. To gain more insight on the types of programming and results, feel free to review the final grant reports and the 5-year Health Plan that was developed.
