This scholarship began in the October of 2006. It is part of a larger Learning Communities Initiative at George Washington Community School (GWCS). College students implement various college preparatory curricula to student’s grades 5 – 12 at the school or at various sites where students will matriculate to GWCS. IUPUI students and students from other college serve as Service Scholars. The GWCS Community School Coordinator, presently, Jim Grim, oversees the program. Service Scholars receive $1,000 at the end of each semester of service from George Washington Community School.
The Fugate Scholars will serve at one of the following sites: George Washington Community School, William Penn Elementary School #49, Daniel Webster School #46, Elder W. Diggs School #42, or Wendell Phillips Elementary School #63.
Fugate Scholars will be required to commit to attending training sessions and serving 6 hours per week at their assigned school October – December and February - April. Scholars will not be expected to serve during the winter or spring break weeks of their respective sites and universities. Service hours will begin with mandatory training in late August.
As a part of the Learning Communities Initiative, Fugate Scholars will be required to fulfill their hours by serving in two specific ways. First, they will implement college prep activities during the school day to various designated classrooms. In order to do so, they will become familiar with a curriculum based upon a variety of college preparatory programs including Dollars for Scholars, Professor Garfield, ScholarShop, ScholarShop Junior, and Unlock the Future.
They must schedule 1 hour of prep time per week in order to prepare for leading classroom activities. These prep time hours will count toward the 6 hour weekly commitment. Second, Fugate Scholars will either assist as tutors in AVID classes or serve as college student role models in the existing after-school programs at their sites. This may include homework tutoring and leading or supervising an after-school club or activity.
Fugate Scholars receive a $750 scholarship from IUPUI at the beginning of service each semester and will also be awarded an additional $1,000 education award from The Learning Community Initiative upon completing their service throughout the semester.
Scholarships are renewed each semester for Fugate Scholars who properly fulfill their scholarship commitment.
