(Sept. 16,2008) Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Eugene White and Marion County Health Department Director Dr. Virginia Caine announced public fitness hours for a new Wellness Center at George Washington Community High School on the city's near Westside.
Part of the school's recently completed $27 million restoration, the fully equipped, 6,000-square-foot wellness center is designed for fitness conditioning by students and athletes. The center now welcomes use by parents and other community members Monday-Thursday, 4:30-7 p.m. Adults are charged a $20 annual fee.
The Washington Wellness Center offers free personal trainers provided by Fit for Life student fitness and exercise science majors from the Department of Physical Education at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) as well as health and nutrition advice from students of the School of Nursing at IUPUI. Dr. Caine noted that both West Indy and Near West new Quality of Life Plans developed through the Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiative (GINI) identify Fit for Life and the new facility to support community five-year health goals to reduce obesity, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke.
Dr. White said the adult programming fits into his goals for IPS high schools to provide more parent and community engagement opportunities in after-school hours.
"We want our schools to become more engaged as hubs of their communities, offering both youth and adult programming in non-school hours," Dr. White said. "George Washington and this program in particular illustrate the types of life-long learning opportunities our public schools can provide. Through collaboration with IUPUI, our School Wellness Initiative, Continental athletics program, Washington Alumni Association, the Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center and other community partners, students and their families can enjoy this state-of-the-art facility during school and into the evening hours."
The IUPUI Fit for Life begins its fifth year at GWCHS and also provides services at Howe Community, Northwest and Manual high schools. Funding supports have come from the Central Indiana Community Foundation, IUPUI Center for Service and Learning and the Mary Rigg Neighborhood.
