Boyer Scholars Program

(2010-11 applications will be available in January 2010)

Purpose

As part of IUPUI’s Commitment to Excellence , funds have been designated for faculty to participate in the Boyer Scholars Faculty Development Program. The Boyer Scholars program, now in its fourth year, is for faculty with experience in teaching service learning classes and is designed to

Influenced by the work of the late Ernest L. Boyer (1990; 1994; 1995), the Boyer Scholars program supports faculty with experience in teaching service learning classes to assess, research, document, and disseminate their scholarly work in service learning or civic engagement to others. The expectation of each Boyer Scholar is to complete scholarly publications and formal presentations to peers. Boyer Scholars will work collaboratively with each other and staff of the Center for Service and Learning to create scholarly products that have (a) clear goals and adequate preparation, (b) appropriate methods, (c) significant results, and are (d) effectively communicated to peers, within the discipline, and among community stakeholders.

Boyer Scholars will meet for a required two-day Orientation Retreat on Tuesday, May 19th and Wednesday May 20th, 2009 (9:00 am- 4:00 pm; University Library) and participate in a Faculty Learning Community during the 2009-10 academic year.  Modeled after the Faculty Learning Community program, Boyer Scholars will meet for six three-hour sessions during the academic year (meeting times typically occur on Fridays, either morning or afternoon).  The Faculty Learning Community will (a) familiarize faculty with the core literature on service learning and civic enagement, (b) assist faculty with research methodology and scholarship of teaching, (c) increase understanding of a wide range of topics (e.g., civic learning outcomes, documentation of scholarly work, research methodology, classroom assessment, theoretical frameworks), (d) facilitate conversation and structured feedback by peers on scholarly work, (e) sustain faculty commitment to research and scholarly process, and (f) develop professional networks to advance the scholarship of engagement.

Faculty Stipend and Additional Support

Boyer Scholars will receive a $5,000 stipend (paid as a supplement to salary in a lump sum) to be funded with Commitment to Excellence funds in July, 2009. Boyer Scholars will also be able to apply for additional support of up to $500 in matching funds to support travel to a professional conference to present on scholarly work related to service learning or civic engagement.  Like other faculty, Boyer Scholars may apply for a Service Learning Assistant ($750-$1,500 per semester) to assist with research activities or service learning course implementation.  Any other costs associated with participation in the Boyer Scholars Faculty Development program must be provided by the Department/School.
