The Fugate Scholarship began in October 2006 in honor of the late Daniel Fugate, a Near West community and public school advocate, as part of a larger Learning Communities Initiative at George Washington Community High School (GWCHS). Fugate Scholars implement various college preparatory curricula to students in grades 5–12 at GWCHS and neighboring elementary schools. Students committing to service at GWCHS must be available at least one weekday (or a combination of days) from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Students committing to service at one of the elementary schools must be available to serve at least one weekday (or a combination of days) between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
