Paw's Scholars

Scholarship information

When to apply

Applications for the 2019–2020 academic year will open on November 1, 2018.

Application deadline

February 1, 2019, at 11:59 p.m.

Duration of scholarship

Awarded per semester, and renewable for the academic year.

Award amount

  • Paw's Pantry or Paw's Closet chair: $2,000 per semester; $4,000 per academic year
  • Vice chair of Paw's Pantry: $666.50 per semester; $1,333 per academic year

Average time commitment

  • Chair: 10–13 hours per week
  • Vice chair: 5–8 hours per week

Eligibility

  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.75
  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student 
  • Are not on IUPUI academic or disciplinary probation 
  • Must have completed at least two semesters at IUPUI or another institution of higher education
  • Have the minimum number of credit hours per semester to remain eligible: 9 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students; 6 credit hours for graduate students 
  • Complete a criminal history check, which is initiated through the Center for Service and Learning

Program description

Paw's Scholars assist the Office of Student Advocacy and Support to oversee the operations of the on-campus food pantry and clothing closet. We connect with the campus and community to fulfill our mission and vision to advocate for those who experience basic needs insecurity. Paw's Pantry and Paw's Closet are sustained through passionate involvement, volunteers, and the support of the Division of Student Affairs.

How to apply

To apply for the Paw's Scholarship, students need to apply through IUPUI's scholarship portal, Academic Works. Students will need:

  • Personal essays/responses to the general application and specific application questions
  • Resume

To complete the application for all Sam H. Jones Scholarships:

  • Complete the general application through One.IU.edu, keyword "scholarships"
  • Under the Opportunities tab, select Our Opportunities
  • Search "Paw's" or "Sam H. Jones"

Scholarship requirements and expectations

  • Represent IUPUI in a positive manner while serving, planning, and facilitating all activities
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75
  • Maintain ongoing and open communication with the program director through emails, phone calls, and meetings
  • Attend semester retreats
  • Attend weekly committee meetings
  • Complete an average of 10 to 13 hours of service (chair position) or 5 to 8 hours of service (vice chair positions) each week
  • Serve in the pantry six times per semester
  • Fulfill any other duties and obligations as given by the program director
