- Description:
- The Children's TherAplay Foundation provides physical and occupational therapy on horseback (hippotherapy) for children with special needs. We provide in clinic speech therapy for our current client base as well with plans to expand the speech program in the future. We treat kids 18 months to 13 years with a variety of diagnosis and developmental delays. Children's TherAplay has been specializing in hippotherapy for 20 years and is largest clinic in the country specializing in hippotherapy. We need 8-10 volunteers per day to walk alongside our therapy horses during a child's physical or occupational therapy session to stabilize and ensure client safety, called sidewalkers. Our therapists will actively be treating the child while on the horse and the sidewalker is there as an extra set of hands to help support the child and assisting with games and activities performed while on the horse. Sidewalkers are not required to have horse experience since we have trained professionals to guide the horses. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. To get started, new volunteers would schedule a time to come out for a 1-hour tour/orientation that includes shadowing a sidewalker. We are open Monday-Thursday 8am-6pm and Fridays 8am-5pm. Minimum of 1 volunteer service hour per visit. On average, volunteers sign-up for 2-hour time slots and come on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
